Petroleum Minister Supports Genesis and Moving Fert’s Phosphate Development Strategy

Egypt’s phosphate industry is entering a new phase as the country accelerates downstream processing projects and seeks to convert its substantial mineral resources into higher-value industrial products.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said Egypt holds the world’s third-largest phosphate rock reserves, estimated at around 3.1 billion tonnes, providing a strong resource base for expanding phosphoric acid, phosphate fertilizers and other downstream industries.

Speaking during a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, Badawi said the current strategy focuses on maximizing the economic return from Egypt’s mineral resources through local processing, industrial integration and greater private-sector participation.

The minister highlighted the role of Genesis Mining and Moving Fert Egypt in advancing integrated phosphate projects that extend from exploration and geological evaluation to beneficiation, processing and the production of higher-value phosphate products.

Genesis is developing one of the largest planned phosphate investment programmes in the New Valley after signing a memorandum of understanding with Egypt’s Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority for an integrated mining and industrial project.

The company’s preliminary investment plan is valued at about $930 million.

Under its long-term plan, Genesis aims to develop phosphate mining capacity of up to 20 million tonnes of ore annually, supported by processing and beneficiation facilities capable of producing around four million tonnes of phosphate concentrate per year.

The company is also evaluating an industrial complex with annual capacity of around 500,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid and approximately 500,000 tonnes of phosphate fertilizers and related products.

 Its exploration programme includes around 2.5 million linear metres of drilling to strengthen geological data and secure resources for long-term operations.

Moving Fert Egypt is pursuing a separate integrated project at Abu Tartour in cooperation with the mineral resources authority.

 The programme covers exploration, geological assessment, resource and reserve estimation, ore beneficiation and quality improvement ahead of potential downstream production of fertilizers, phosphoric acid and derivatives.

The projects form part of a broader industrial drive centred on Abu Tartour, where Egypt laid the foundation stone in August 2026 for a phosphoric acid complex with investments of $658 million.

The first phase is designed to produce 250,000 tonnes of high-concentration commercial phosphoric acid annually.

Construction is scheduled for completion within 30 months, with output planned for export through Safaga Port.

The project is expected to generate more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs.
