Egypt–Nigeria Cooperation to Advance the Mining Sector

Egyptian–Nigerian relations are witnessing unprecedented momentum, and this momentum is once again reflected in one of Africa’s most promising sectors.
On the sidelines of the Egyptian–British business mission’s visit to London, Eng. Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, held an extensive meeting with Dr. Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development.
The discussions focused on the future of bilateral cooperation in the mining sector and ways to expand its pathways in the coming period.
During the meeting, both sides showed a clear commitment to deepening the partnership.
The two ministers exchanged views on the current landscape of the mining industry in their countries, the reforms underway, and the investment-friendly policies designed to create an attractive climate for investors.
Special emphasis was placed on supporting startups and medium-sized companies, while paving the way for major investments to enter this vital sector with confidence.
The talks also addressed ongoing efforts to modernize the mining framework in both countries.
These efforts include updating relevant legislation, introducing additional incentives, and enhancing the capabilities of technical personnel, alongside expanding value-added industries that maximize the economic return of extracted minerals.
Both sides stressed the importance of industrial integration and the exchange of expertise across production chains.
The discussions further explored cooperation opportunities in exploration, concession management, and mine development, with a strong focus on adopting modern technologies that accelerate exploration activities and boost the sector’s attractiveness to investors.
The ministers also examined the possibility of aligning standards to ensure that Egyptian and Nigerian mineral products can access global markets with competitive quality.
During the talks, Eng. Badawi extended an official invitation to his Nigerian counterpart to attend the Egypt Mining Forum scheduled for September 2026.
The forum serves as a key platform that brings African nations together and broadens regional cooperation in a sector central to the continent’s development prospects.
At the close of the meeting, the two ministers reaffirmed the strength of the relations between Egypt and Nigeria and their shared commitment to transforming current political and economic momentum into concrete, practical steps.
They agreed to move forward with launching joint projects that benefit both countries and enhance their presence on the regional and global mining map.
