Wadico Advances Clean Energy Integration in Phosphate Production
In line with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategic direction to support both mining development and environmental sustainability, the New Valley Mineral Resources and Oil Shale Company (Wadico), an affiliate of the ministry, has signed a contract for the development of a solar power station during the Egypt Energy Show “EGYPS 2026”.

The project reflects the ministry’s continued commitment to expanding the deployment of clean energy solutions across industrial and production sites, with the objective of enhancing operational efficiency, reducing reliance on conventional fuels, and supporting the transition toward more sustainable mining practices.
The agreement was signed with Asunim Egypt, a subsidiary of ASUNIM SOLAR ENERGY Ltd, marking the launch of the first fully integrated off-grid solar power project at mining sites in Egypt.
This milestone represents a significant step forward for the Egyptian mining sector, bringing renewable energy into core mining operations and reinforcing the sector’s alignment with national sustainability and energy efficiency objectives.
Engineer Amgad Abdel Razek Ghoneim, Chairman of Wadico, stated that the project is expected to deliver annual savings of approximately 2.6 million liters of diesel fuel, contributing to lower operating costs, reduced consumption of conventional fuels, and supporting the state’s broader efforts to ease the fuel import bill.
He added that the project will be implemented at the El-Shaghab site in Aswan, with a total installed capacity of 3.2 MW.
The solar station will supply power for electric mining equipment, including three dump trucks and two loaders, in addition to feeding three phosphate ore crushing lines and supporting the site’s full operational infrastructure, including camps and administrative buildings.
According to Wadico, the project places clean energy at the center of phosphate production operations and establishes a new benchmark for the integration of renewable energy solutions within Egypt’s mining sector.
The project is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 7,300 tonnes annually, contributing to a lower carbon footprint for mining activities and supporting Egypt’s environmental and climate commitments.
Engineer Ghoneim emphasized that the project is not being positioned as a standalone initiative, but rather as a scalable model that can be replicated across other mining sites in the future, creating broader opportunities for sustainable transformation across the sector.
For his part, Bu Leiming, CEO of Huawei Digital Power, the project’s technical partner, expressed pride in contributing to what he described as a pioneering project for Egypt’s mining industry.
He noted that the collaboration highlights the value of advanced technology in improving operating efficiency and accelerating the adoption of sustainable energy solutions.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the petroleum and mining sectors, including Geologist Yasser Ramadan, Chairman of the Egyptian Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority; Engineer Ashraf Bahaa, Chairman of South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company; Dr. Mohamed El-Bagoury, Head of the Central Department for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; and Engineer Mahmoud Nagi, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Safety, Environment, Energy Efficiency and Climate, and the Ministry’s official spokesperson.
Through this project, Wadico reinforces its role in supporting the modernization of mining operations in Egypt and demonstrates how renewable energy can serve as a practical driver of efficiency, cost optimization, and environmental performance within phosphate production and beyond.
