Barrick Explores Golden Opportunities in Egypt’s Promising Desert

As part of implementing the third pillar of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy — aimed at launching a strong breakthrough in the mining sector and increasing its contribution to the national GDP — Egypt’s Eastern Desert witnessed intensive field activities by a delegation from the global company Barrick Gold, in a move that reflects the depth of the partnership and cooperation with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, led by Engineer Karim Badawi.

The field visit, which followed a productive meeting between the minister and the company’s delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, extended over several days in coordination with the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA).
It commenced with the delegation’s arrival in the city of Shalateen — known as Egypt’s gateway to gold — and continued to Wadi Al-Allaqi, where the team studied gold ore deposits within quartz veins and associated metamorphic zones.
The inspection tour also covered several promising mining sites, most notably the Iqat Gold Mine to monitor operational activities and examine the geological structures, as well as the historic Umm Al-Toyour mine to assess ancient gold indicators and investment potential.
Other strategic sites visited included Betam, Umm Shoshouba, Seijaj, Wadi Marrah, Himour, Umm Grayat, Anjat, Abu Fas, Wadi Umm Rilan, and Al-Atshan.
During the visit, the Barrick Gold delegation expressed their admiration for the vast mining potential observed at the various sites.
Representative samples were collected to conduct detailed laboratory studies — a step that strengthens the company’s readiness to launch serious exploration activities in these promising areas, paving the way for new investments in Egypt’s growing mining sector.
These significant field activities underscore the seriousness of the collaboration between the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Barrick Gold, while also supporting Egypt’s national vision of transforming the mining sector into one of the major pillars of the country’s economy in the coming period.
